Schools Turn to Log Cabin Specialist for New Buildings

New buildings for schools beat the budget bug..

March 2009

“Schools and colleges are turning more and more to alternative solutions in order to get their new classrooms and other buildings developed” says Rural Leisure Director Steve Missen. The advantage is that they can be erected much more quickly, are potentially quicker to get through planning approvals and make very stylish, eco-friendly buildings that blend well in their surroundings.

They can also be used to teach the children about environmental issues and sustainable living, as well as providing new facilities affordably.
A new school outbuilding

Rural Leisure Limited is one of the country’s leading suppliers of timber buildings. The company supplies structures for a variety of uses, including education, leisure, commercial and residential. Log cabins make excellent training rooms and visitor centres in a variety of applications, from llama trekking to water parks and as holiday homes.

Rural Leisure has been supplying bespoke log cabins for over eight years and is also a leading supplier of environmental solutions which can be incorporated in the building and which are designed to work hand in hand with the local landscape and ecology.

“These log cabin designs are ideal for schools,” says director Steve Missen.  “We will always design them individually for whatever the school needs and equip them with full plumbing facilities so they can stand alone if necessary. But the real advantage is that they can be built within a few weeks, so easily within the summer holidays. They provide a real and more permanent, long-lasting, alternative to the portacabin style classrooms that many schools rely on when their admission numbers go up. And they are much more attractive and eco-friendly.”

Ashby School, based in Ashby de la Zouch in Leicestershire, was one of the first educational establishments to turn to Rural Log Cabins. The school now has two outside eating areas, the first was erected in 2005 and within 12 months a second was built, both fully equipped to serve hot and cold food and drinks. Nicola Leigh, Catering Manager at Ashby School, said: “We are extremely happy with the two outbuildings from Rural. They are really popular with the students, who prefer to be outside on their breaks, and the buildings have eased congestion around the school at break times. They are a valuable asset to the school’s catering service.”

Rural Log Cabins has also built a classroom for Montessori Pre-School in Lutterworth, south Leicestershire. The extra building is used as a ‘base’ room for the 2-3 year old infants for them to eat, play and sleep. Claire Oliver from Montessori School says: “Our classroom is such an asset to the school and was built with the minimum of fuss. The extra space has not only allowed us to take on more children but has also provided a really enjoyable outside area to work in.”

In addition, the company has built an outside food station for Wreake Valley Community College in Leicestershire and a classroom, toilets and kitchen facility for Chackmore playgroup in Buckinghamshire.

Rural Log Cabins Limited prides itself on its environmental credentials and is able to supply a wide range of sustainable features from solar and photovoltaic panels for heating and energy to biogesters and rainwater harvesters, amongst other things.
