  A Home of Gran's Own

When 94-year-old Miss W faced the upheaval of having to move from her Cotswold cottage, friends and neighbours rallied round to give her a cosy cabin home with the help of Rural Log Cabins, the specialist supplier of luxury log cabins as homes. Now she will be able to live in comfort in a cosy, purpose-built log cabin in the area she loves, surrounded by the friends and neighbours she knows and who help and support her.

Cosy Cotswolds Cabin - no planning pain

The timber-built “Granny” bungalow, designed and constructed by Rural Log Cabins Limited, was the ideal solution for 94-year old Miss W, who wanted to be independent and have her “own front door.” At the same time, because her new home was to be built within an area of outstanding natural beauty in the Cotswolds, it had to be “in keeping” with the environment and meet stringent planning regulations.

Log cabins are classed as non-permanent residences and can sometimes gain planning permission where other buildings would be deemed unsuitable.

Miss W’s new log cabin provides a comfortable, one-bedroomed chalet home, fully fitted with disabled facilities to make cooking and bathing easier. Rural Log Cabins Limited worked closely with Miss W and her neighbour Mark S. to design the perfect log cabin which would be a cosy home for her and would provide the kind of facilities she needed to live comfortably.

“We built a lovely open plan living area and kitchenette so that she can get about easily with her walking aid and can cook for herself,”
says Steve Missen, Managing Director of Rural Log Cabins. “The bathroom has full disabled facilities including a walk-in shower, rather like a wet room.” and the cabin has all the “mod cons” of a conventional dwelling but is designed to blend in to the natural environment and complement the landscape.

“Because we design each log cabin individually, we were able to accommodate all Miss W’s needs and make the cabin really comfortable and practical at the same time,” says Rural Log Cabins’ director Steve Missen.

  Watching the World Go By

Neighbour Mark S., who built the log cabin in his garden, comments: “Steve was very helpful in designing a really comfortable home for Miss W. It was his suggestion that we should install a large picture window at the front so that she can sit and watch the world go by. My daughter has put the rabbit hutches in view of the window so that she can watch the children going to and fro to feed them and play with them, and we are about to put up a bird table, so she will always have plenty to watch.”

Rural Log Cabins is one of the country’s leading suppliers of bespoke log cabins for a variety of uses, from residential properties and holiday homes to leisure facilities such as visitor centres, sports facilities and schoolrooms, each individually designed to suit the customer’s requirements. The “Granny bungalow” is a perfect solution for people who want their elderly relatives living nearby but also want a little privacy and separation. Where planning restrictions are a problem a log cabin in the garden may be more appropriate and sympathetically viewed by planners.

“This was a great project for us, giving us the chance to get to know Mark and Miss W personally and really design the home that they wanted,” says Steve Missen. “Miss W is a very impressive, independent lady and we have been able to give her that feeling in her new home whilst Mark and his friends and neighbours help to look after her when she needs it.”

For Mark the new log cabin is both an act of kindness in providing a home for Miss W in the place she knows best, but is also an investment for the future. Miss W pays rent, as she did in her previous home, and Mark and his family will continue to own the property which may be useful in later years for his own parents or in-laws.

A Beautiful Kitchen
For Miss W the log cabin is an ideal solution to what would have been a major upheaval at a time in her life when she needs to be settled and among the people who help and support her. As care for the elderly continues to become more and more costly, the idea of a log cabin as a Granny home for elderly relatives is growing in popularity and practicality.
