Today more than ever people are concerned about their impact on the environment around them, the so called 'Carbon Footprint'.

Here at Rural Log Cabins we share that concern, and although Log Cabins and Timber Framed constructions are inherently more environmentally friendly than traditional methods of building, this hasn't stopped us from striving to make our designs have even less impact on the planet.

One of latest projects was as Catanger Llama Trekking in Northants, the location for this cabin provided many challenges as there was no connection of either mains Gas or Electricity to the site and the owners David & Mary Pryse didn't want to be dependant on these supplies in the future. This offered a chance to create a design based around both wood burning cookers and Solar Power to remove any dependency on the mains Gas & Electricity supplies.

Mr. & Mrs. Pryse being experienced farmers knew exactly what they wanted from the project and supplied sketches of a floor layout which we used to create the cabin design. A 30
° angle was used on the roof to allow for the maximum efficiency of both the Photovoltaic Panels and the Solar Hot Water collectors and a Battery Cabinet was created underneath the end balcony so there was no need for any extra enclosures outside of the cabin superstructure.

Solar thermal panels on the roof of the cabin will supply ample hot water in the summer and almost all the required amount in winter months, whilst winter heating, cooking and some hot water is being provided through a wood-burning stove. The stove and a small wood burning heater use the wood they grow on their smallholding and therefore need no additional resources to heat the cabin. All human waste goes into a biogester and is safely processed on site.

The combination of all these environmental features provide a zero carbon rating on the SAP scale, the Government’s Standard Assessment Procedure for the Energy Rating of Dwellings. The calculation has been made, even assuming the worst air leakage results, giving an environmental impact estimated at the lowest level for CO2 emissions and energy consumption.

Our latest project (construction has recently begun) is at Blackdyke Fisheries in Norfolk , these will be our first designs that are wholly constructed on site (excluding window & door units).

In previous projects we have used sections custom manufactured off-site and assembled at the project location. Blackdyke Fisheries Cabins have been manufactured by our engineers & carpenters on site thus removing another wasteful and time-consuming portion of the construction process.

In fact this process has begun to show more benefits than even we anticipated and we hope to be using this method many times in the future.

In short Rural Log Cabins are committed to ensuring that the design and construction of our Log Cabins and Timber Frame Buildings is done with the most consideration to the environment possible. We are constantly researching new technologies that will allow us to keep our designs at the cutting edge of this vitally important field.
